So, where are we now? Great Britain? No, not really, more like Little England. Our Prime Minister sees himself as having Churchillian qualities, I see them more as Trumpian ones. The only thing he shares with Churchill are that he is a racist bigot. Before you all start shouting that Churchill wasn’t I suggest you go and read some history. The PM is a liar, a cheat, a charlatan, and in saying that I have probably insulted all three. Don’t believe me? The facts are all there for scrutiny. He is more of a Fagin than a Churchill. It wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t wake up every morning with the thought ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’. I am not joking! He’s robbing you blind. He is handing out your money to his Tory cronies and mates willy nilly, with a total lack of scrutiny. Thus his wealthy mates get richer, and you all get poorer.

Alongside his pal Priti he wants to ensure that you are all shafted, screwed, and well and truly buggered. Between them they want to ensure that when they kick you in the teeth that you will be unable to protest. Yes, indeed, they want to remove the right of protest. They also want universities to institute free speech rules to ensure that some of their mates can say what they like when they like. Ensuring that someone, say a holocaust denier, can peddle his/her vile message, and that they can’t be deplatformed, and that if they are they can sue. Boris wants to be able to ensure all of this happens with the use of photo voting ID cards, a move guaranteed to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of impoverished and ethnic minority voters. Naturally he doesn’t give a shit that these people will be unable to vote because they wouldn’t vote Tory anyway.

He got himself elected with the ‘Get Brexit Done’ slogan. Well, he got Brexit done, and we can all see what a disaster it has proved to be. The greatest act of self-harm by any nation in recent history. Yes, I know, our stance on Brexit has not been a good one, in fact it has been piss poor. Returning to Boris’ Churchill persona, here is another way in which he differs from his hero. Boris has ripped us out of the EU, interestingly Winston Churchill wanted to create a United States of Europe

Yet all the while there is a remedy which, if it were generally and spontaneously adopted by the great majority of people in many lands, would as by a miracle transform the whole scene and would in a few years make all Europe, or the greater part of it, as free and happy as Switzerland is today. What is this sovereign remedy? It is to recreate the European fabric, or as much of it as we can, and to provide it with a structure under which it can dwell in peace, safety and freedom. We must build a kind of United States of Europe. In this way only will hundreds of millions of toilers be able to regain the simple joys and hopes which make life worth living. The process is simple. All that is needed is the resolve of hundreds of millions of men and women to do right instead of wrong and to gain as their reward blessing instead of cursing.

Which leads me to believe that all of the Churchill persona is bluff, bluster, a distraction, the stuff of a conman.

Boris says that he is a Unionist, but at the same time is driving the break up of the union with his intransigence and control freakery. I do believe that Scotland should have the right to decide its own future, and to make its own decisions. But that does not necessarily have to come through independence, it could come through a federation of autonomous states working together to make mutual decisions. What we have right now is that Westminster decides, then tells everyone else what will be done. The Brexit case makes this point very clearly. Scotland predominantly voted to remain in the EU, but has been dragged, sometimes kicking and screaming, out of it with absolutely no consultation whatever. No wonder they are angsting for independence. Then there is Northern Ireland and the problems that the Irish Sea Border (which Boris promised would never exist) is causing. Of course it doesn’t help that NI is in the grip of a bunch of religious fanatics who are completely out of touch with modern day life. Boris has pushed NI up shit creek and stolen the paddle.

So, where from here? Well Labour must work with the other opposition parties, and form a coalition that will see the this Tory nightmare replaced with a workable government - if that has to be a coalition then so be it. The one thing that must be addressed in the first term is complete electoral and constitutional reform. This to ensure no further Tory nightmares. Alongside this we have to begin to address, and redress, all of the societal problems that have been caused by more than a decade of this Tory nightmare.  Those privileged toffs like Boris, Rees Mogg et. al. belong to another century. They don’t want worker’s rights, a living wage, an end to zero hours contracts. All of those things eat into their profit margins. They want to maintain their feudal ideology, and to keep the workers where they belong, back in medieval times. This must end. Britain must be rebuilt better and stronger, with every part of it whether that be Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, having a say in how it should be done.

This once proud nation can no longer be ruled by a Little England mentality that wraps itself in a flag, and maintains the ideals of Empire. The Empire is long gone, and good riddance to it. Yes, we need to engage with the world, but as an equal partner, not as a Little England screaming from the side-lines that we once told you all what to do and you did it. I have heard it said that we ruled the Empire benevolently. This is quite true, but what is missing is the phrase ‘at the point of a gun’. True, we must not forget the past, but we should not allow it to dictate to us. We should be looking to the future, and to how we can restore all of the inequalities that exist today. There is a time to do all of this. That time is NOW!
